Notes: Since this is for a simulator, I don't really need cryptographic randomness. The new UUID can reasonably be considered unique among all UUIDs created on the local system, and among UUIDs created on other systems in. The uuidgen program creates (and prints) a new universally unique identifier (UUID) using the libuuid (3) library. You can generate up to 10000 random identifiers once, but you can retry for how many times you want. What is the best way to programmatically generate a GUID or UUID in C++ without relying on a platform-specific tool I am trying to make unique identifiers for objects in a simulation, but can't rely on Microsoft's implementation as the project is cross-platform. On Linux, the util-linux / util-linux-ng package offers a command to generate UUIDs: uuidgen.
